Laddakh bans tourists till April end

Laddakh has imposed a ban on entry of tourists in the region till April end.The order was issued by the commissioner of Laddakh region.Laddakh has detected 3 COVID 19 cases.

Similar order banning deboarding and exit from Srinagar airport for tourists has been issued by District Magistrate,Srinagar, under section-34 of National Disaster Management Act-2005.

A jawan of Indian Army was also detected positive for COVID 19 infection.He is hospitalized in Leh.

Whole Chachhot village, which is located at the bank river Indus, is under quarantine.

Local police, ITBP and local officials are keeping a close watch on the village.

This village has one of the largest population of Shia muslims in Leh.

Shia community of Kargil and Laddakh has very close connection with Iran.Many have marriage relationship with families in Iran.

All cases detected in Laddakh have travel history of Iran.

Laddakh has very small population of only about 150000 .Any epidemic like COVID 19, which has no cure,can play havoc in the region.We need to be extra careful says Dr Tshulthing Dorze,an expert of social and cultural heritage of Laddakh.

Although full fledged tourists season starts from May onwards, some hotel operators are apprehensive.

General public has welcomed this ban.
