Gunmen believed to be linked to the Lakurawa group killed at least 34 people in a series of planned attacks on small villages in Kebbi state in northwest Nigeria. The raids happened on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Survivors said the attackers came in an organised way and shot people without caring who they were.

A security report seen by Reuters said the village of Mamunu was hit the hardest, with 16 people killed. Awashaka lost five people, and Masama lost three. In five other villages, two people were killed in each, as the attackers moved from place to place. The report said the attacks were meant to break local resistance and force people to run away.

Who are the Lakurawa?

Lakurawa is becoming a serious security threat. At first, around 2017, some local communities accepted them because they were brought in to protect villages from bandits. But over time, the group turned on the same people they were supposed to defend.

Now, Lakurawa acts like an extremist armed group. They demand money from villagers, steal cattle, and try to impose strict religious rules. Security experts say they may have links to the Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP). They often hide in thick forests near the Niger border, where government control is weak.

Why attacks keep happening in Nigeria

This incident is part of a bigger crisis. Nigeria faces repeated violence for several reasons:

  1. Easy border crossings: Fighters can move between Nigeria, Niger, and Mali, bringing weapons and using remote areas to hide.
  2. Severe poverty: Many young people have no jobs, and armed groups lure them with money and promises.
  3. Security forces are stretched: The military is dealing with many threats at once—Boko Haram and ISWAP in the northeast, separatist tensions in the south, and bandit violence in other regions.
  4. Conflicts over land and water: Climate stress and shrinking resources increase fights between farmers and herders, and armed groups take advantage of this disorder.

Environmental pressure does not directly create terrorism by itself. But when land, water, jobs, and services are limited, communities become more fragile, and extremist groups find it easier to recruit and control people.
