What is a pandemic?

Dr DK Pandey , a disaster management expert, says The term pandemic can be defined as a simultaneous spread of a disease to large number of countries spread over large geographical area.

What are effects of declaration of a Pandemic ?

Pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly. says DG WHO.

He further said It is a word that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear, or unjustified acceptance that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death.

Each country has some sets of instructions to be followed during a pandemic. The obligation of reporting of cases becomes more important.

Each country is expected to follow WHO and UN guidelines very seriously.

Why WHO has declared COVID 19 as Pandemic?

The statement of DG WHO clearly mentioned the cause of this declaration.

DG WHO said that WHO has done this assessment for two main reasons: first, because of the speed and scale of transmission

He said WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction.

In fact, some countries have taken the advice of WHO very lightly. These countries initially avoided taking strict actions for containment.

He said The second reason is that despite our frequent warnings, we are deeply concerned that some countries are not approaching this threat with the level of political commitment needed to control it.

This declaration of Pandemic have created a deep sense of concern and seriousness all over the world.

Decline trends of COVID 19 cases

More than 90 percent of cases are in just four countries, and two of those – China and the Republic of Korea - have significantly declining epidemics.

81 countries have not reported any cases, and 57 countries have reported 10 cases or less.
